Early this year, Desiree (my 10 year old) literally begged me to permit her to  take Netball as a CCA. I was hesitant initially given her intensive swimming lessons at the Chinese Swmming Club. Eventually, I agreed but on the condition that she does not neglect her studies. She kept to her side of the bargain. Unfortunately, she will be opting out of the sport end of this year. While I am pleased with the decision given the desire for her to focus on swimming, I am disturbed by the basis for the withdrawal. No, she is still interested in Netball.

I thought it could be the strenuous training since Netball is considered one of the principal sports of the school. Then again, I have seen the demanding training schedule at the swimming club and she has managed relativey well. Recently, I found out that the Netball coach was the cause for her decision. She has been curt in her comments, often giving the students the 'tough' treatments and totally uncaring in her approach.

Competitive sports are never easy especially for kids. The discipline and tenacity required to excel is truly overwhelming. Toughening the kids need not mean harsh language and lack of care. If not managed appropriately, the drive for excellence will eradicate the greater call for educators - care for  and holistic development of students. The trainings at the swimming club have always been tough yet not conducted at the expense of the children's relationship with their coaches. Clearly, the school needs to assess its strategy and approach when working with external service providers who can sometimes contradict  the school's value and in Desiree's instant, killed a potential talent in the field.*Sigh*

Delia Ho: Coaching style backfired
A caring teacher produces better quality student who wants to excel themselves. Should talk to school regarding the coach. She could be the next Singapore national sports person and because of this coach, you'll never know, it's not fair to your girl or all the other students in the school. Press on to have better coaches.

xiaozhao: Coaching style backfired
It is usually easy to blame the coaches, teachers or anyone else. Sometimes, it might be more appropriate to examine whether has undue stress been placed on a child in such a manner that a previously enjoyable activity might become not only unenjoyable but even torturous. The attitudes of the child matter as much as the attitudes of the coaches. It is far too easy to lay the blame with so many mitigating factors.
