So what to do when you feel your child needs to exercise more to get rid of that excess weight but is not motivated to do it on his own? And when you work late, who can actually and effectively monitor a regular exercise schedule for him?

Is the solution to enrol them into some form of physical training?

At first consideration, this takes care of the regular and vigorous activity regimen a growing child needs. And yes, if your child has a sweet tooth, this training helps keep that potential diabetes risk down.

But also consider, such physical training if it is an art form in itself can provide the initial fascination to motivate, which in turns creates a momentum to sustainable physical activity without your further intervention.

My nephew thought he was getting fat (plus hearing various family comments!) and wanted to take up a martials arts class, probably intrigued by the art itself, and less so about losing fat and certainly it was not due to the thought of reducing the risk of getting diabetes!

Noting it is after all "martial" arts, I encouraged him thus:

"Train well. Train safe. Apply training responsibily. Grow in discipline, and be a man of peace!  :)

And I might add, keep that diabetes at bay!
