THE older established schools would naturally have had a better opportunity to have developed areas of excellence. In this regard, not every school would be in a position to take advantage of the DSA exercise and thus may not currently participate in it.
Participating schools
It is important to note that each participating school has its own merit-based academic and non-academic criteria for selection.
These are based on the qualities, such as the talent in science, music or sports, that the school emphasises. To assess these qualities, a school may conduct tests, interviews or trials.
Be aware of the stages involved
Of course, your P6 child has a choice of whether or not to participate in this exercise. But if he or she chooses to do so, the first step is to get more information about the preferred secondary school.
But make sure it is a DSA participating school. You can find out about this by checking out their website, calling or visiting it.
Flowchart of the stages
The MOE provides a helpful flowchart of the stages involved in the DSA-Sec exercise. While these are based on the 2008-09 DSA-Sec exercise, the basic steps would remain the same.
The site also provides a list of DSA-Sec exercise participating schools but be aware that this can change and so following up with a preferred school would be advised to ensure you have the most up-to-date information to guide you.
