SHERLYN Koh discovered that she had a passion for mathematics after going to the Green Bean Tuition Centre which currently caters for secondary students.

"I had a heck-care attitude," says Sherlyn recalling those years when her inability to comprehend what was taught in school resulted in a lack of motivation to study. She had then a mindset that studying had no aim, that it had no application to real, working life.

Conducive study environment

Green Bean offered her a motivating environment to practise mathematics, resulting in a clearer understanding of the concepts involved.

"This allowed me to generate and nuture my interest and passion for the subject," said Sherlyn. "Good results and encouragement from my instructor and fellow tuition mates propelled me to further improve and better myself."

Significant takeaways

Getting to know from different people at the tuition centre about their goals and dreams made Sherlyn start to ponder about her own.

"Talking to seniors and the lead instructor made me realize the importance of education, especially in the Singapore context. Thus, Green Bean provided me with the mental drive to study hard in order to pursue my future endeavours."

Sherlyn "graduated" from Green Bean at the end of 2006, and went on to her junior college education. She is now a Year 1 student at the Singapore Management University.

Her appreciation of what she had gained earlier at Green Bean is such that she keeps returning to the centre to help in the instruction. As a senior, it is now her turn to give back, helping the later generations of "Green Beans".

Looking for the Green Bean experience?

According to Sherlyn, the following are its highlights:

  • Expect more than just getting good grades.

Prepare to experience an attitudinal change towards learning. Sherlyn rates highly the lead instructor's sharing of basic life skills and social skills (not generally taught in the school curriculum) that she deems to be a vital part of growing up.

  • Versatile styles of teaching provided to suit the needs of each student.

This is enhanced by the instructor-student bond forged through the months and years there, a mutual understanding of the lead instructor's teaching methods and his appreciation of each individual's learning needs.

  • Care and concern for every student that makes each student feel important and significant.

"Simply speaking, you've to experience it to believe it," concludes Sherlyn.
