EXECUTIVE coach Andrew Bryant observed that both his children Tasha and Nathan liked to clap themselves when they did something right and they both beamed when he and his wife gave them praise.

This brings to mind the importance of praise to yield desirable behaviour in our child.

The ECRI approach

Dr Ethna Reid, the founder of the Exemplary Center for Reading Instruction (ECRI) shows that teachers who get the best results, validate regularly.

Her Reid School use the ECRI methods of instruction and teaching strategies to maximise a child's capacity to learn.

Validate and question

It is instructive to note that successful teachers also alternate between teaching and questioning (testing) for comprehension.

Leadership trainer Bryant says: "In leadership and management in a hectic paced world it is all too easy to criticise poor performance and to tell rather than ask. In our leadership for managers program, we emphasise and rehearse the arts of validation and asking good questions."
