VERONICA Tang started going to the gym at the age of 14. She increased her frequency in her late teens. In her experience, prior to her regular gym training routine, her academic results were not desirable.

"My A level results were quite average," she noted.

But after she entered the university, and picked up frequency of gym training, she has been on the Dean's List for the last two semesters.

Apart from the endurance that gym training helps to build for my races, it also helped to make me a more determined person. This determination has brought me tremendously improved academic results.  - Veronica Tang

Such results has also given her an opportunity for exchange programmes overseas. She is pleased to be heading to Loughborough University in the United Kingdom this September.

Train to do well in your co-curricular activities (CCA)

Fifteen-year-old Bennett Lee started going to the Serangoon Gardens Country Club gym a year ago. He needed to train for his CCA rugby, as well as for general well-being.

He reckons he has gained in other areas as well.

"I think I have benefitted health-wise. The gym concentrates one's daily activities like picking up things, pushing your car and makes you better able to tackle the same situation with increased strength the next time round."

From holiday activity to a regular routine

Eighteen-year-old Daniel Lim made friends with the gym also a year ago: "I was having holidays and had a lot of spare time. I felt that I needed to do something to get in shape and started using the gym on a regular basis."

He was skinny back then but now has "gained considerable weight/mass/muscle and learnt the importance of a healthy diet."

His advice for other youth about exercising in a gym?: "It is not all about just hitting the gym everyday, but having a proper routine, good rest and a healthy balanced diet."
