"APART from the significant weight loss I achieved from using the gym, socializing with the other gym-goers also brought out a passion in me that I would never have dreamt of, " says undergraduate Veronica Tang.

"When I saw and talked to a couple of them who donned marathon jerseys, I decided to join one myself since I'm fit enough to do it."

She has to date completed a half-marathon and a full Standard Chartered marathon in December 2008.

sgcc_gym5"Exercising in the gym helps me to build up the core muscles and stamina required to tackle the marathon," says Veronica.

She is thankful to her dad who introduced her six years ago to the gym at Serangoon Gardens Country Club (SGCC).

The gym as a stress-reliever

"Whenever I feel extremely packed with project deadlines and for now, the exams, the gym would be a nice place to head to for exercising to get refreshed," says Veronica.

I always head to the gym for a work out when I feel stressed from work. It helps me to de-stress and refreshes my mind so that I can do more. I also feel happier after my workout sessions. - Veronica Tang

On her gym at SGCC which is open from 7am to 10pm daily, she noted:

"I think it was the comprehensive equipment and the nice cosy environment that gave me a sense of belonging to the gym. It feels like THE ACTIVITY that I will engage in whenever I have free time simply because it feels good exercising and sweating buckets there."

sgcc_gym3Daniel Lim, another SGCC gym user agrees.

"It is in pristine condition and very pleasant to use. It is also not as crowded as other gyms and the other patrons are friendly."

I felt that I needed to do something to get in shape and started using the gym on a regular basis. - Daniel Lim
