THE Serangoon Gardens Country Club (SGCC) prides itself as a family-oriented country club. Monthly club subscription is currently just $60. This allows the member and his or her whole family (including youth below 21 years of age) to use the gym for free.

This free usage extends to the Olympic-sized swimming pool, kids pool jacuzzi, spas, steam bath and the sauna. There is a minimal fee for using certain other facilities like the billiards room and the bowling alley.

Membership Manager, Ms Lee Kim Pei explains:

"We offer 2 types of memberships: Term memberships priced at (one-time) entrance fee of $1800 per year or $3000 for two years, and the Ordinary transferable lifetime membership at $5200 downpayment or $450 monthly for 36 months (this is the existing membership promotion)."

SGCC gym statistics
  • Exercise machines: 10 treadmills, 4 bicycles, 2 Arc trainers, 3 cross trainers and 23 resistance machines (for whole body workout).
  • Average age of the machines: less than 4 years.
  • Size of the gym: 305 square metres or about 3200 square feet

Ms Lee said that the machines are well utilised by youth. While they may have been introduced to the gym at an earlier age by family adults, by late teens they tend to become more frequent gym users.

"Usually in their late teens, their motivation is to look good and healthy. Some train for their NS," noted Ms Lee.

Other gyms in Singapore

SGCC is just one of the many providers of gym facilities in Singapore. Its advantage is that it probably would have more of a collegial atmosphere due to family regulars, and possibly newer equipment funded by a regular and active membership.

Additionally, places like the SGCC would have many other facilities that one could bring an entire family to enjoy.

However, if all you need is just some equipment for you and your family to use regularly for training, you could check out the gyms at community centres which usually charge a nominal fee per entry.

Ultimately, what gyms can offer is a social atmosphere of like-minded individuals who would help to encourage each other to persevere in their quest for excellence in fitness of body and mind.

Apart from the significant weight loss I achieved from using the gym, socializing with the other gym-goers also brought out a passion in me that I would never have dreamt of. - Veronica Tang.
