Exam Strategy #1 To Help Your Child Perform for the Upcoming SA1 Math
Dear Parents,
With the belief that more practice results in better performance, parents are spending hours every day drilling their children on papers after papers.
While some students may improve through endless drilling, the harsh truth is- most don’t!
Effective Exam Strategy #1
Don’t: Ask your child to complete the practice papers and walk or worst, show them the procedural steps to arrive at the right answers when mistakes are made.
Do: Work with them by asking them the right questions pertaining to the context and mathematical concept of the sum to help them understand the how-to of arriving at the answer through the right solution steps.
Why: The exact same questions probably won’t appear during exams but, the mathematical concept and the way to go about working through a problem sum remains the same however you slice and dice the questions.
How: With each mistake made, you are better off slicing and dicing the exact question in multiple ways to help your child see the underlying mathematical concept.
Results: Once your child understands the logic and reasoning to solve the questions then he or she will be able to solve the similar question types, however, they may be known as – challenging, non-routine or higher-order thinking questions.
Bonus: This approach to guiding your child not only cuts down hours that he has to spend on repetitive drilling, it also gives your child more time to study other subjects or simply chill a little during school holidays. Of course, not forgetting he gets to enjoy Math because he now knows how to work through the sums independently and confidently!
