Changes in PSLE Grading
Hi Parents,
The replacement of the current T-score system for the Primary School Leaving Examination with the Achievement Level (AL) 1 to 8 will take effect from 2021; and the P5 cohort next year will be graded as such to help the students ease into the system.
Children can now focus on their own achievements rather than being compared to their peers since their marks will not be subjected to further calculation based on the mean and standard deviation attained collectively through the performance of the cohort in the T-score system. Simply put, with the current system, if a child does well with the majority doing badly, the T-score of your child will be affected.
While de-emphasizing competition amongst peers is somehow true, it does not negate or remove the importance of grades for entry into desired secondary schools. Students still need to benchmark against themselves for progress because ultimately, one’s Personal Best at AL4 or AL32 is still the primary quantifiable consideration for admission to the choice schools.
Coach Clifford Lim who spent a decade teaching in MOE schools until last year added,
”The reality is, the pressure to perform in a milestone national examination to compete for the limited spot in the child’s or parent’s desired secondary school will be ever present. You can’t change or repackage this. Therefore, it is important for parents to manage their expectations, know your child’s area of lesser strengths and attain the right help to guide in the learning to achieve the Personal Best AL.”
While there are many means to learning, one thing remains certain for parents - to adopt the most effective and proven way especially with every exam drawing closer to the PSLE.
Your child’s Personal Best AL needs time to hone because scoring in examination today takes application skills on top on content knowledge. Do you know what it takes to hone these skills?

Yours Sincerely,
