THINKINGMATH@onSponge supplementary titles in the Conquer Problem Sums series employ a dual approach designed to help pupils excel in word problems in a systematic and structured way as described in the Introduction to ThinkingMath.
In this article, we look at the More Than/Less Than key construct.  This is developed across P3 to P5, and revised at P6.
It has a number of variations (see below) which can be applied to solve problem sums in topics and units across each primary level:

Look out for the clues "more than", "less than" - these refer to a whole number being more than or less than another quantity. These are relatively non-complex problems where it is best to use the Model Method.

Now the problem sum involves more than two items, but still only two basic types. Model is still a simple one. When drawing the model, express the additional amount as an extra instead of just a gap.
