"Have you ever _______ from the Fountain of Youth before?" the gnome asked Tinkerbell.

1) drink
2) drinks
3) drank
4) drunk


My answer is (3) but the answer sheet put (4)

Have will always take drunk (past participle)
Have you ever drunk ........ is the correct answer

I thought the sentence should be "Did you ever drink from the the Fountain of Youth before?"

Ok, at the first look, I also chose 3. However, the correct answer should be 4.

'Drinking from the Fountain of Youth' in this sentence may not seem that usual.

Let's take an example

see (present), saw (past), seen (past participle)

'Have you ever seen a dinosaur before?'

In the above sentence, I merely changed the verb and noun and it will be much easier to discover the correct answer.

drink drank drunk --> see saw seen
Fountain of Youth becomes dinosaur.

As 'seen' is used correctly in this sentence and it is the past participle form, the past participle form, 'drunk', should be used for your question.

after have, had or has, the verb should be in the past participle form

The correct answer is option 4.

The perfective 'have' goes with a verb in the past participle form.
