pls help with this Q: in a pastry shop, the number of cakes was twice the number of cream puffs. after 90 cakes and 42 cream puffs were sold, the ration of the number of cakes left to the number of cream puffs left was 2:5. how many cakes and cream puffs were in the shop at first?

my part solution is wrong. answer is 306.

c: cp
x5] 1u:2u [x2
x5] 90 42 [x2
x5] 2p:5p [x2

5u:2u
450:84
10p:10p

5u+450+84-->2u
3u --> 534
u = 178

Based on the question given, the ratio of cakes to cream puffs at first should be 2:1 rather than 1:2. Using this information, results in an answer that is not practical - (a fraction of a cake and a fraction of a cream puff). Assuming the original ratio should be 1:2 as you have used in your solution, would still result in there being 366 cakes and 732 cream puffs at first.

Has the question been typed in correctly?

Commenting on your solution .....
- you need to write the sold cakes and creams puffs as -90 and -42 like
c : cp
1u : 2u
-90 -42
2p : 5p
- you didn't multiply 2ux2 --> 4u for cream puffs at first
- also, when you arrive at the converted ratios, in your case
5u:2u
450:84
10p:10p
your model will look like (but note - the numbers are incorrect regardless)
5u+450
2u+84

Hi,

I suspect that there is a typo-error from the answer key. As explained by Chris, assuming the qn is correct C: P is 2:1 and should the answer be 306 then working backward, you will start with C=204 and P=102, substracting the cakes and puffs sold, your ratio is NOT 2:5. Try it.

The following is the answer worked out for you and given its not a whole number, then either the pastry shop sells part cake/puff or the qn has to be improved upon hope this helps ...

Hi Shirley

I have been through the MyPal workbook and it does not provide the solutions. Are you referring to the Text Book? Also, that question does not appear under MyPals (this years) in the ratio section of the P6 Text Book.

Not sure if you are still looking for a solution on this. The solution to the question is as per Elsa's posting. And the solution given does not match the question. You could try taking 306 which means Cakes is 204 and Cream Puffs is 102. Then subtract 90 and 42 and you will see that the ending ratio is not 2:5. I would not worry about this question and move on ...

Hi Chuyi, sorry I do not understand what you are asking. Is what plus the two numbers? What two numbers?

If you are referring to this specific question posted in this thread. The question and the solution do not match. If you try to solve the question as posted / published in the homework book, the solution provided by Elsa is correct and the answer would result in 137.25.
