Tim's monthly allowance is $42 more than Earl's. Earl spends $54 more than Tim every month. Earl's savings is 1/2 of Tim's savings. If Tim spends 3/7 of his allowance every month, what is his allowance for the entire year?

To solve this problem, we can draw a model of the situation and use the ratio of Tim's savings to spent to determine the allowance for 1 month.

You have raised some good questions. Which book or paper are they from ?

Erm... why is there a additional of $54 in Earl's part in your model? I thought Earl spends $54 more than Troy? I thought is a subtraction of $54 in Earl's part? Did u see the question wrongly as Earl saved $54 more than Troy every month?

The solution is correct.

Try using Tim's / Troy's allowance of $336 each month and working through the information provided in the question. You will see that the numbers work out correctly. With regards to the "additional" $54, the grey part of the model indicates spent as does the information in the blue boxes explaining the model - "savings on the right and spending on the left".

You could also use a combination of units and model drawing to solve this.
