Hi there, another mind boggling question to be cleared by the experts here. Any help?

The amount of money that Betty had was 5/7 of the amount of money that Shanil had. If Shanil gave betty $28, the amount of money that Betty had was 140% of the amount of money that Shanli had. How much money did they have together ? (Ans: $168)

Concept: Total unchanged

Before
Betty : Shanil
5 : 7

Change
Shanil gave betty $28

After
Betty : Shanli
140 : 100
7 : 5

2 units -> $28
1 unit -> $14
12 units -> $14x12 = $168

Amount of money that they had together = $168

Check
Before
Betty : Shanil
5 : 7
70 : 98

After
Betty: $70+$28 = $98
Shanil: $98-$28 = $70

Betty : Shanil
98 : 70
7 : 5
140 : 100

The only difference I would make is to add the total units after the ratios so we can see the change required. In this case, we are lucky in that the totals before and after are the same without have to use LCM.

Concept: Total unchanged

Before
Betty : Shanil
5 : 7 (Total 12 units)

Change
Shanil gave betty $28

After
Betty : Shanli
140 : 100
7 : 5 (Total 12 units)

2 units -> $28
1 unit -> $14
12 units -> $14x12 = $168

Amount of money that they had together = $168
