P5 Maths External Changed & Gap & Difference 1 Year, 5 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi, need help with the following 2 questions. Thank you.

Q1.
Mary had thrice as many sweets as chocolate bars. After giving away 55 sweets and 16 chocolate bars, she had thrice as many chocolate bars as sweets left. How many sweets did she have in the end?

Q2.
Mrs Tan bought some magnets for her students. If she gave every pupil 8 magnets, she would have 5 magnets short. However, 6 pupils did not turn up. In the end, every pupil got 1 more magnet and Mrs Tan had 3 magnets left.
a)How many pupils were there in Mrs Tan’s class at first?
b)How many magnets did Mrs Tan buy?

For this question you can use the External Changed concept. However ....

Can you check your question pls. Using the numbers above, you end up with 0.875 sweets left. I know if it was me, I would eat the 0.875 sweets - this is why my tummy is sooo fat now

This question uses a combination of Gap & Difference and Simultaneous Equations.

Let me know if you require more explanation as this one is a little tricky for a P5.

set the sweets she had in the end as one unit (u), so the chocolate bars she had at first were (3u+16), the sweets she had at first were thrice as many as chocolate bars which were 3*(3u+16). ====>

3*(3u+16) - u =55

9u+48-u=55

8u=7

u=0.875
