if you mean leaves that were green and changed red?
- in the autumn, the tree begins to shut down its food making factories in preparation for the winter and the green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves leaving behind other colour pigments such as red, yellow, orange
- in the winter the trees will live off the stored food and will wait until spring to begin making food again

if you mean red leaves that are always red or red when the tree is young, the answer is yes they can still make food. if not the tree would die ! for these trees there is still green chlorophyll there but you just cannot see it because there is more red pigment than green. some of these trees are red when they are young to warn off animals to note eat the leaves and after 1 or 2 years change to green colour. but these trees still need to make food to survive
