THINKINGMATH@onSponge's Conquer Problem Sums series focus on getting a pupil to grasp a conceptual understanding of the problem type, before guiding him or her to use a suitable method or strategy to solve the problem, as indicated in the Introduction to ThinkingMath.

THE More Than/Less Than key construct applied in ThinkingMath@onSponge has a number of variations for specific situations. These include solving problem sum groupings involving comparisons and multiple individuals. In this article, we present four more variations.


As mentioned previously, the phrase ‘whole number more than or less than' in a problem statement indicates it is best to use model drawing.

For problem sums grouped under this External Unchanged variation, when drawing the model diagram remember that an amount is removed from only one individual or item; the other individual's (or item) amount will remain the same before and after.

Type 2 involves a more complex model where each individual/item is represented by more than one bar.

More than/less than (Type 3: External unchanged)

Type 3 involves cutting the model representing the individual/item (remains the same size) into appropriate number of smaller units.

In the Internal Transfer key construct variation, the total number of items remains the same as any movement is confined within the items identified in the question.

The answers are in the back of the book and about 15-20% can be found on-line. This is done so that readers are aware that alternative solution can be found on-line and also so that readers can seek assistance from the authors and moderators through the forum. I hope you find having direct access to the authors and moderators is beneficial smilies/smiley.gif
