thinkingMath supplementary titles in the Conquer Problem Sums series employ a dual approach designed to help pupils excel in word problems in a systematic and structured way.
- Conceptual learning: By using key constructs (groupings of problem sums with similar characteristics), pupils can effectively grow in their conceptual understanding about problem types.
- Procedural learning: After understanding the problem type using key constructs, pupils can progress to apply a variety of effective methods or strategies to solve the problem.
Parents and educators are thus encouraged to use Conquer Problem Sums starting from P3 and follow through to P4, P5 and P6 (mainly revision) in order to reap maximum benefit.
The brief explanation (in the following articles) of each key construct and its variation, if any, is accompanied by an illustration taken from a suitable section of one of the books, and reference is made to other related sections for further practice.

Yes you are correct. There are many sayings that support your comment such as "Try try again"; "Practise makes perfect"; "We learn from our mistakes"; etc. It all boils down to the fact that if we do not try we cannot move forward. When we try we make mistakes and learn from those mistakes. The real winners are those who try and learn from their mistakes. Those who never make mistakes and/or are afraid of making mistakes will eventually fall behind.

The solutions are in the back of the books - unless your teacher took them out. Either way try drawing a picture of of both containers with the different amounts of glasses and compare the total mass of each container. If you still have a problem, you can post your questions in the forum.

I certainly agree that kids (with family) should spend more time developing sporting, cultural and other interests that well develop our minds and body. I believe MOE is taking steps towards this and I look forward to the day we have a mixed balance. Unfortunately, it will be too late for my daughter, P5, this year.
Looking back, we question how much of what we learnt was really practical in our everyday situations. I think this all depends on what we ultimately end up doing in our professional and personal lives. For example, percentage, speed, rate are all useful "skills" to have. I would say, ratio and fractions are too. In my mind the biggest question is, "When is the right time to learn each skill?" While I think a child's mind is capable of absorbing more (like a sponge), are those same children mature enough, with appropriate experience, to really benefit from the learning.
I compare this to a graduate who has done 5 years of working experience before taking his/her MBA vs those who take their MBA straight after obtaining their bachelor degree. In my opinion, those with the 5 years of work experience gain more from the MBA, find it easier and more enjoyable. Furthermore they contribute more thus increasing the value of the experience of all involved as well.
My two cents anyway ...

In addition, you did not indicate what score is flying colours. For you maybe its 95 whereas a good score for another might be 75. Also you need to look at how you did on SA2 in P4 and CA1 to better understand. In general, past year exam papers are good as they given you a variety of questions and are in the correct format. When you identify weaknesses than find books (or other help) that can help you with those weaknesses.
