Meet "The Lightning Thief"
A FANTASY/ADVENTURE novel based on the concepts of Greek mythology in present day setting, The Lightning Thief is fast-paced and written in humorous style. The story follows the adventures of Percy Jackson, an ordinary 12-year-old boy diagnosed with dyslexia, but who now discovers he is a demigod or half-blood ie born to a mortal woman and a Greek god.
Camp for demigods
When Percy finds out his best and only friend, Grover is a satyr during a trip with his mother, he urgently tells Percy's mother that he must go to a camp, kept under wraps from mortals, where he would be trained to survive the hardships of life as a demigod. The adventures take off from there, fast and furious.
At the camp, Percy meets many other young demigods, both friendly and hostile, who are also in the process of discovering their heritage and powers.
Percy learns that the legendary beings of Greek mythology still exist and have always existed, including the various monsters one reads about in books on mythology. The Olympus, dwelling of the Greek gods is now situated at the mythical 600th floor of the Empire State Building.
During a Capture the Flag game at camp, Percy is attacked by the children of Ares, the god of war. He heals when he steps into the river nearby and is revealed as the son of Poseidon when Poseidon's trident appears above his head.
Because he is a child of one of the three main Greek gods (Zeus, Poseidon and Hades), he learns to expect frequent attacks by monsters.
Target reading audience
Initially when a friend recommended it to me, I had hesitated. But after reading the first few pages, I was drawn to it especially its tomfoolery humour which made it even more appealing.
As the storyline could get slightly complicated for younger readers, this book would strongly appeal to tweens/teens ie those in upper primary and lower secondary. In fact, the series would appeal to anyone older including adults who are keen fans of Greek mythology and look forward to an entertaining humorous read.
